Jim Murphy is a Senior Director, Research covering employee experience technologies with a focus on intranets, employee portals, and architectural foundations for the digital workplace.

Previous experience

Mr. Murphy has served Gartner clients in various roles: As a key initiative leader for Corporate Legal and Compliance Technologies he developed a research agenda and established a cohort of analysts to address the technology demands of corporate legal and compliance leaders.

As research director in Gartner's Digital Workplace group, he advised clients and conducted research on building effective intranet strategies. In addition, he advised clients and conducted research on Web Content Management and Portals as they evolved to support digital business. He led the effort to identify and define the market for Digital Experience Platforms (DXP).

With AMR Research, Mr. Murphy advised clients on knowledge management, collaboration, content management, enterprise search and portals. He worked with software vendors on marketing and product strategies, tracking trends to assess the competitive landscape. He was instrumental in developing AMR Research's customer portal and many of the firm's internal knowledge management practices.

Having worked at AMR Research since 1996, he has held various positions in the IT, marketing, editorial and research departments. As Director of Publications, he was responsible for building the company's content management strategy, including the design, creation, editing, publishing and distribution of thousands of print and electronic reports and articles per year.

Prior to joining AMR Research, Mr. Murphy taught English literature and composition at several New England colleges and secondary schools.

Mr. Murphy has written and published many articles on a broad range of technology topics, and has been quoted in numerous trade and top-tier publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Financial Times and Reuters.
